    Should not do this

Damage to definitive lists is a problem indeed, but making lists lockable creates the following new problems:

    • Who gets to decide when a list is locked?
    • What if that (those) person(s) lock(s) a list in error?
    • What happens to lists that are ongoing and ever-changing, thus inappropriate to be locked at all?

    Should not do this

Sometimes people make mistakes on definite lists i.e. movie version from the wrong year. Also, with the multiple versions of things, it’s sometimes good if someone changes the item to the more popular.

    Should do this 1 cheer

It’s extremely frustrating when people edit definitive lists. The list for “1000 places to see before you die” has essentially been destroyed because everyone is adding their local favorite places and removing places from the official list that they don’t think should be on there. It’s a book, it’s definitive. It should be locked.

Okay, this is something that’s been driving me nuts for a while…

On Lists of Bests, I made a list of Hitchcock’s films. The Mountain Eagle has been lost for decades, but I included it in my version. People – well, mostly just one person, actually – keep deleting it from the list even though I’ve asked them not to.

There’s another list that doesn’t include it, and I’ve even linked to that one on my list, hoping people who are going for completion will add it instead, but no such luck.

It would be great if I could “lock” the list, so no one could make any more changes.

Obviously this wouldn’t work for things like Best Picture winners, but given that Hitch is dead, I don’t think there’s any danger of the list needing updating.
